Description
In 1991, a stochastic music piece called Gendy3 was produced entirely by a computer program written by the composer Iannis Xenakis at CEMAMu. In his words, Xenakis asked "What is a composer? A thinker and plastic artist who expresses himself through sound being." We now can hear computer generated sounds that we were incapable of imagining before. The relations between human beings and music has been changed, from human control to digital control. In this research, I will deal with the following questions: Can new music help to enhance our epistemology of the universe? Can new music change our perceptions of the relations between human beings and music?
Xenakis adopts a western-scientific approach on composing his music. I Ching, on the other hand, from the East, is the object of more discussion and comprehension with the help of the development of mathematics and science. I will compare Xenakis’s approach and the I Ching to answer the above questions in three parts: philosophy, music, and human beings.
Conclusion
As the discussion above, a strong correlation between the western scientific approach on music and the eastern mysterious web of signs of math has appeared. To find out the concrete answer, a physical space with experimental music could be taken as a tool to take future steps on this analysis.
