Description
An account of the resource
Architectural and music computational models have profoundly affected the ways we describe, interpret and evaluate existing architectural and musical works as well as the ways we design new works in both domains. Two aspects of these computational models – representation and process (rules) are considered here to foreground similarities and differences between the two art worlds. A new computational model, the allography machine, is considered in the end as an rule-based visual tool for making graphical/spatial compositions in both domains.

This paper looks at how sound, light and shadow performances could be achieved by the method of granulation and layering as demonstrated by the work of Iannis Xenakis and Laszlo Moholy Nagy. The similarities as well as the differences in the two approaches are suggestive of the potentialities of such a design methodology.

Description
An account of the resource
In 1991, a stochastic music piece called Gendy3 was produced entirely by a computer program written by the composer Iannis Xenakis at CEMAMu. In his words, Xenakis asked "What is a composer? A thinker and plastic artist who expresses himself through sound being." We now can hear computer generated sounds that we were incapable of imagining before. The relations between human beings and music has been changed, from human control to digital control. In this research, I will deal with the following questions: Can new music help to enhance our epistemology of the universe? Can new music change our perceptions of the relations between human beings and music?
Xenakis adopts a western-scientific approach on composing his music. I Ching, on the other hand, from the East, is the object of more discussion and comprehension with the help of the development of mathematics and science. I will compare Xenakis’s approach and the I Ching to answer the above questions in three parts: philosophy, music, and human beings.
Conclusion
As the discussion above, a strong correlation between the western scientific approach on music and the eastern mysterious web of signs of math has appeared. To find out the concrete answer, a physical space with experimental music could be taken as a tool to take future steps on this analysis.

Description
An account of the resource
The presentation brings together reflections on the continuum of Performance, Practice and the Academy that aims to address the wider interdisciplinary intentions of Iannis Xenakis. We reflect on the musical and spatial design synergies generated through design research within the three modalities of Performance, Practice and the Academy. ‘Design research’ as ‘researching through design (Downton 2003)’ provides a platform for creative practitioners to generate knowledge through their practice. The author will focus on a selection of his activities over twenty-five years as a musician (Performance), architect (Practice) and researcher (the Academy) seeking to cross-reference and find synergies between domains
PERFORMANCE: The ImprovScope Project
Whilst there has been intense examination of the continuum of music and architecture in relation to the outcome of musico-spatial design processes in the work of architects such as Xenakis , this creative research focuses away from the ‘product’ towards the actual creative process.
This research operates within the modality of ‘research through design (Downton 2003)’ at RMIT University Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory Sound Studios. The ‘ImprovScope’ project involves first-person explorations of the author’s improvisations on the electronic drum kit. This scoping out of the authors’ solo improvisational capacities will serve as the basis for musical compositions and creative works (See https://soundcloud.com/jjham/tripscapes) and is founded on improvisation as a vehicle through which to generate massive amounts of musical output. Improvisations are recorded in MIDI across three contexts: Beat and Fill; Drum Solo and Studio Beats, template at 100 BPM for 100 beats.
The project discusses the application of a spatial design parametric framework that offers affordance (Gibson 1979) to mediating a theoretical ‘musico-perspectival hinge (from Pérez-Gómez and Pelletier (1997)). The presentation contends that musicians who may be limited in their understanding of their music because of an inability to read, and in particular those who may be dominant in the visual-spatial thinking insights into the attributes that constitute their style. Through plan, section, elevation, axonometric projections and, ultimately, through 3D printing, drum based music is examined.
PRACTICE
This element of the presentation discusses the application of the ‘Y Condition (Martin 1994)’ within the design of the author’s own house at Bells Beach, Australia. Concepts of music, including Golden Section geometry, overlays of beat structures in window fenestration and metaphorical references to searing guitar solo’s are embodied within this built work. This element of the paper will discuss how musical concepts must, in the real world, be reconciled against pragmatic, regulatory and construction issues.
THE ACADEMY
The author reflects on a 16-year architectural design academic career and his current role in exploring musico-spatial design connections through design research. The Music Room project is discussed, wherein second year architectural design students were required to compose a ‘musique concrete’ piece, design a ‘Music Room’ space to listen to this, and construct a selection of these at 1;1. This project was run over a period of five years, resulting in around fifty projects being constructed.

Description
An account of the resource
In his book «Revealing Architectural Design: Methods, Frameworks and Tools”, Philip Plowright explains that every knowledge coming from an external discipline needs to be translated in order to be used as a designs principle in other discipline. This translation of knowledge process is called domain-to-domain transfer or inference transfer. Them, as it is known, architectural and musical composition are based on an internal syntax that incorporates its own knowledge, but they also infer external knowledge. So, in order to use external knowledge in architectural or in music syntaxes, it is necessary to translate these informations through an operation of domain-to-domain transfer. This is true not only for architecture and music, but for all disciplines.
Technically, in the inference transfer process, some selected content is brought forward from a source domain, mediated through a transfer frame, and then implied in the target domain. The validity, quality, and significance of the content in the target are dependent on the relevance of the relationship between itself and the content from the source. This activity can be frequently called an analogy, a metaphor, a homology, or a simile.
The primarily tool for thinking around an object, situation or application by the point of view of its potentially transfer principles is called first principles reduction. It is at the core of how information is moved between domains. The act of reduction begins to abstract an object or situation away from a particular disciplinary application to a more general statement. Once a general understanding of principles has been achieved, it is relatively easy to move those general principles across disciplines. The generic, generalized factors that are the result of a first principles reduction are not coded in any disciplinary language. They can be associated with a new domain and then expanded back to a particular application by applying deep discipline syntax.
As attested by Plowright, structure-mapping is a more intricate form of transfer through first principles reduction. In structure-mapping, the interest is in identifying strong relations between objects in a specific source domain in order to enrich the content of a target domain (architecture, music). A selected aspect of the source domain – which is a context, an event, or a situation – is ‘exploded’ into its component parts. This will include objects of the source domain, the attributes of those objects, and the relations between those objects. As explained by the author, the source frame holds content in its particular syntax, the transfer frame moves that content into general principles, and the target frame translates the general principles back to particular syntax but in a different domain of knowledge.
This paper proposes an analysis of the Xenakis compositional process through the inference-transfer methodology. In this aim we propose to analyze some works in which the composer has explicitly applied the transdisciplinarity between the musical and architectural domains in order to clarifies his process of thinking.

Description
An account of the resource
If layering is an arrangement which allows not only the navigation within any one of the layers and the navigation through different layers but also the creation of new layers in the form of assemblages, the components of which are entities encountered in other layers, then any element is neither a fragment nor a stable entity but rather a ‘trace’, the trajectory of which is an integral part of the identity it assumes at each moment of its journey. In such a setup the subject is not an outside perceiver but another layered entity with a memory which allows for changes in identity without dissolving the notion of the entity.
Even though, at least in the case of architectural practice, Layering is a technique used extensively to produce hand-drawn and digital design and construction documents, as well as in the actual construction itself, it is, compared to concepts such as collage, montage, bricolage or folding, less, if at all, investigated in the field of architecture but also in art or philosophy,
Freud compares the way the brain stores information with the way Rome, the Eternal City, is layered. And while there are of course important differences, what is attempted is an investigation into the potentials offered by using layering as a model for thinking and designing. From a rather personal methodology for painting, to proposals for the buffer zone dividing Cyprus into the north and the south, to a novel way of writing, the present project playfully navigates through diverse material which is itself layered while layering the subject exposed to it who is consciously or not already engaged in layering anyway. It could thus be said that the proposed paper is all about ‘layereding’ a term expressing both the passive and the active component of the phenomenon of being layered while being engaged in the action of layering.

An account of the resource
Keynote
