Description
An account of the resource
The underlying idea that noise and silence may constitute the two ends of the same continuum is the subject of our research. Noise and silence are examined as notions beyond their strict sense of the word; their expanded connotation reflects on creative thinking, aesthetic and cultural matters and scientific research. We focus on the relationship of noise and silence, with respect to sound and space, by interpreting them as spatial elements. The composition Continuum II for solo viola (2015) by N. Chatzopoulou, has been used as a platform in order to investigate how the elements of noise and silence, which are used structurally in order to attain cohesiveness and a continuous flow in time, can be interpreted in space. Experimenting with different surfaces, layers, textures and light, we aim to explore the fine constituents of silence and noise and consequently observe the points that they converge and diverge from each other. Without aiming to neglect the other senses, our cultural preference for the ocular proves useful in revealing hidden aspects of the relationship between silence and noise and the nature of this continuum. As a result, it has a significant impact on how we think, listen, design, create and live in our contemporary world.
