<em>Xenakis, UPIC, Continuum Electroacoustic & Instrumental works from CCMIX Paris, Mode records, </em>livret p.35-36)
"<em>Eua'on'ome</em> (1995) extends the method of chronographic recording to the ensemble of macro-timbral components of all the instruments of the orchestra. [...] I add to the idea of macro-timbre of orchestral instruments the notion of pressure in the sonic emission [...]. In <em>Eua'on'ome, </em>the orchestra is distributed in an orthodox way : cellos and basses in front, violons and violas in the middle, wind instruments and percussion in the back. On the two sides of the orchestra are two open pianos, always with the sustain pedal down, creating long acoustic resonances of the instrumental ensemble." (Estrada, Julio. <em>Xenakis, UPIC, Continuum Electroacoustic & Instrumental works from CCMIX Paris,</em> Mode Records, p.32)

</span><em>Xenakis, UPIC, Continuum Electroacoustic & Instrumental works from CCMIX Paris</em>, Mode records,<em> </em><span>livret p.17)</span>
"<em>L'Autel de la Perte et de la Transformation</em> was conceived and should be thought as a piece about noise - its nuances, flavors, transparency, richness and turbulence" : "The sonic world of this piece is the outgrowth of many hours of listening to the sounds and rhythmic motion of wind as it passes through different types of foliage and of water's movements and eruptions." "Writing is a gesture of communication, interior in certain cases, superfluous in others. Description
An account of the resource
(Pape, Gerard. <em>Xenakis, UPIC, Continuum Electroacoustic & Instrumental works from CCMIX Paris</em><span>, Mode Records, </span><span>livret p.53-54)</span><br /><br />
"This inspiration for <em>Le Fleuve</em> began with the observation of various kinds of fluids : rivers, water boiloing in a pan, and fluid of a different sort, what Freud called "libido", which is the mythological fluid that he used to describe the ebb and flow of human desire. My "river of desire" was [...] a river of sound that would flow as my musical imagination would require. [...]<br />Thi spiece involves the evolution in time of diffrent sound structures. It is concieved on multiple levels of the perception of structure. [...]<br />The macro-level of the piece is the level of order and disorder, but here I concieved the structure perceptually, not mathematically. On a formal level, the piece moves from order to disorder and back to order." Description
An account of the resource

The proposition seeks through the choreography of movement, sound, and light to investigate the nature of space in its poetic and emotive qualities and to articulately craft the boundaries and limits through the use of specific materiality, fabrications, and assemblies, the architecture of contemporary cultural practice and political expression, an architecture determined by its occupancy and use.
In a post cinematic world, creative production transcends the norms of traditional media and disciplines. Not unlike the integrated practice of architecture, the practices of fine art and performing art are more often than not, combinatory in their execution and rooted in a multiplicity of references.
Light and sound are the palpable materials of architectural containment and are simultaneously the prinicipal forms of its occupation. Traditional spatial composition has relied upon the surfaces of resistance and reflection; space can be understood in the dissolve and blur of the visual and the aural at the limits of perception and tactility.
Current discussions in the academy and in experimental practice are focused on responsive architectures and interactive interface; the work posits the concept of generative archtiectures in terms of materials, hybrid systems, and controls through both improvised and scripted tenancies as acts of invention and innovation.
In Paul Mazursky's film The Tempest, John Cassavettes plays Prospero as an architect rebuilding an a ancient amphitheatre on a Greek isle. He lifts his glasses to the darkening skies ..... the lighting flashes, the thunder roars, and the waves crash on the shore "show me the magic"

Keynote

Description
An account of the resource
If layering is an arrangement which allows not only the navigation within any one of the layers and the navigation through different layers but also the creation of new layers in the form of assemblages, the components of which are entities encountered in other layers, then any element is neither a fragment nor a stable entity but rather a ‘trace’, the trajectory of which is an integral part of the identity it assumes at each moment of its journey. In such a setup the subject is not an outside perceiver but another layered entity with a memory which allows for changes in identity without dissolving the notion of the entity.
Even though, at least in the case of architectural practice, Layering is a technique used extensively to produce hand-drawn and digital design and construction documents, as well as in the actual construction itself, it is, compared to concepts such as collage, montage, bricolage or folding, less, if at all, investigated in the field of architecture but also in art or philosophy,
Freud compares the way the brain stores information with the way Rome, the Eternal City, is layered. And while there are of course important differences, what is attempted is an investigation into the potentials offered by using layering as a model for thinking and designing. From a rather personal methodology for painting, to proposals for the buffer zone dividing Cyprus into the north and the south, to a novel way of writing, the present project playfully navigates through diverse material which is itself layered while layering the subject exposed to it who is consciously or not already engaged in layering anyway. It could thus be said that the proposed paper is all about ‘layereding’ a term expressing both the passive and the active component of the phenomenon of being layered while being engaged in the action of layering.

Description
An account of the resource

An account of the resource
Pitch is an intrinsically fascinating phenomenon. Words fail to describe the emotional impact of a beautiful melody, harmonic progression, bass line, pitch cluster, or cloud of glissandi. Partly because of this concentrated aesthetic power, pitch is also a sensitive and culturally-charged topic, and the most zealously researched aspect of music. This obsessive focus has not resulted in a unified view. Pitch phenomena are studied from different angles by composers of various stripes, music theorists, psychoacousticians, and music psychologists. They import divergent biases and communicate in separate circles.
The current musical situation prompts a reconsideration of the aesthetics of pitch. Two developments motivate this. First, the inherent precision and programmability of digital synthesis removes limitations imposed by acoustic instrument design and human performance. This enables formerly speculative theorizing about pitch (such as precise microtonal performance) to be realized easily in practice. Second, musical aesthetics and technology have opened up to the entire universe of sound, placing the relatively narrow domain of scale-aligned pitched tones in a much broader sonic and compositional context.

Description
An account of the resource
In 1978 Xenakis created at the Acropolis of Mycenae a unique event -in multiple places (polytopon)- a participatory art spectacle for the masses with music and poetry, audiovisual effects, soundscapes with human and animal voices and bells with absolute respect to the historical and the natural soundscape of the archeological site.
In this presentation I will present the structure of the polytope in space and time through a microstructure and macrostructure analysis; I will focus especially on Mycenae Alpha the the electronic piece that has been composed for this event and is based in microstructural sound design in UPIC environment (Polyagogie) through cloud and aborescences. The sound of Mycenae Alpha is the futuristic tool « par excellence » that bridges different events that happen in the "heterotopian" soundscape of Mycenae and thus highlights the cultural heritage of thousands of years through the perspective of a futuristic driven architecture organization in the field of audio, music, speech and natural soundscape.

An account of the resource
A later work (1966), the holiday house Xenakis designed for a musician, his friend F.B. Mâche, the only work realized in Greece (Xenakis and...Plato’s homeland), does not seem to exhibit the Pavilion's formal continuity: arranged in five independent volumes, each one of which is perforated by a series of enigmatic, pretty narrow, openings, it does not even allow any sort of visual continuity. It is a house in diakopés (the Greek word for vacations, literary meaning interruptions, disruptions in continuity). Yet in the midst of these discontinuities, another kind of continuity emerges (a rather 'virtual' continuity, as Colin Rowe once described a certain state of transparency; Rowe & Slutzky, 1992): as one is approaching the house, there are various points from which the volumes seem as a uniform mass; the openings are suggesting a continuous filming of the landscape; each volume is a continuous, topological, transformation of the others and, on the archetypical form of each volume, there is to be found a synécheia (the Greek word for continuity, also meaning the coherence). In these archetypes is expressed a pre-hellenism, an archaism (Grumbach, 2001: 195-199) which is yet poorly studied in terms of Xenakis' oeuvre and the continnum.
Based on a longstanding, original and still unpublished, archival research (2005 onwards), on witnesses from the persons involved and on thorough analyses on the mathematics of forms, this paper aims to investigate the continuities/discontinuities in the house of Amorgos, towards a historicization and reassessing of continuum.

An account of the resource
In the same way that the Cosmatesque floors in San Benedetto in Piscinula affect
the way one interacts with the space consciously or subconsciously, Norman’s use of
palindromic musical gesture give a structure through which to process movement through
time. Both challenge the observer through zooming in on the specific design/pattern of
the materials to trust in the actual and symbolic experience of marching through time. It
is only through “outside time made possible by memory” that one perceives patterns, and
hopes to move forward. This is the spirituality reflection: forcing one to focus on time
itself, the symmetries of experience, and what is to come.

Description
An account of the resource
In his book «Revealing Architectural Design: Methods, Frameworks and Tools”, Philip Plowright explains that every knowledge coming from an external discipline needs to be translated in order to be used as a designs principle in other discipline. This translation of knowledge process is called domain-to-domain transfer or inference transfer. Them, as it is known, architectural and musical composition are based on an internal syntax that incorporates its own knowledge, but they also infer external knowledge. So, in order to use external knowledge in architectural or in music syntaxes, it is necessary to translate these informations through an operation of domain-to-domain transfer. This is true not only for architecture and music, but for all disciplines.
Technically, in the inference transfer process, some selected content is brought forward from a source domain, mediated through a transfer frame, and then implied in the target domain. The validity, quality, and significance of the content in the target are dependent on the relevance of the relationship between itself and the content from the source. This activity can be frequently called an analogy, a metaphor, a homology, or a simile.
The primarily tool for thinking around an object, situation or application by the point of view of its potentially transfer principles is called first principles reduction. It is at the core of how information is moved between domains. The act of reduction begins to abstract an object or situation away from a particular disciplinary application to a more general statement. Once a general understanding of principles has been achieved, it is relatively easy to move those general principles across disciplines. The generic, generalized factors that are the result of a first principles reduction are not coded in any disciplinary language. They can be associated with a new domain and then expanded back to a particular application by applying deep discipline syntax.
As attested by Plowright, structure-mapping is a more intricate form of transfer through first principles reduction. In structure-mapping, the interest is in identifying strong relations between objects in a specific source domain in order to enrich the content of a target domain (architecture, music). A selected aspect of the source domain – which is a context, an event, or a situation – is ‘exploded’ into its component parts. This will include objects of the source domain, the attributes of those objects, and the relations between those objects. As explained by the author, the source frame holds content in its particular syntax, the transfer frame moves that content into general principles, and the target frame translates the general principles back to particular syntax but in a different domain of knowledge.
This paper proposes an analysis of the Xenakis compositional process through the inference-transfer methodology. In this aim we propose to analyze some works in which the composer has explicitly applied the transdisciplinarity between the musical and architectural domains in order to clarifies his process of thinking.

Description
An account of the resource
At first glance, the modern city constitutes a continuing united system in space-time. Roads, buildings, open spaces comprise the idea of urban structure into an interwoven system. On second thought, contemporary cities are seen as townscapes composed by a random collection of fragments, rather than a meaningful landscape of interrelated spaces. These gaps disrupt the overall continuity of the urban form. Nevertheless, they can often be interrelated with everyday expressions of public space activism.
These space-time pauses/tensions on the urban structure constitute a variety of bottom-up initiatives that challenge the increasingly, regulated, privatized forms of the urban system and at the same time defy or escape existing regulations. Tactical maneuvers stand in contrast to the carefully planned city and break the rules for short periods with unexpected, risky activities that inject the urban voids with new functions and meanings. The permanent form of the city and the temporary interventions in it, are what de Certeau call strategies and tactics. During the last years, are observed many actions aiming at the reappropriation of urban voids throughout Europe.
The question which is emerging from such a study is: How these actions can enhance the overall system, although are breaking the rules of the state? How can monotony rhythm of space-time be interrupted and, at the same time in communication with new tones of public life? In exploring these questions, this paper presents two cases: a series of practices implemented by the Atenistas group in the city of Athens, Greece and the appropriation of a lake in an abandoned factory in Rome, Italy. Atenistas, is a group that searches and identifies vacant or misused spaces. They have managed to implement a series of strategies in organizing and activating, not only the spaces as such but in terms of emerging the social network that will sustain and maintain these spaces. The second example is about an abandoned factory which bought by Antonio Pulcini, who intended to transform it to build a shopping center. During the constructions, an unidentified water source from which the water had covered the whole area was revealed. This condition provided the neighboring residents with the advantage to occupy and appropriate the space. Their actions eventually determined the lake’s future use in an agreement with the state. Both cases reflect how the spaces that disrupt the urban structure can be seen as fertile grounds for social regeneration through tactics, rather than one fixed plan.
This thesis aims at bringing new insights about the potentials of residual sites and their role in the development of modern city. It attempts to demonstrate how informal activities in urban voids can interrupt the monotonous continuity of the city bringing new social patterns and promoting a more creative continuity of the urban system which can enhance the social bonding whilst fostering the creation of meaningful social relations. These cases can offer lessons for other cities that wish to improve the public life of their urbanites through pauses enhancing at the same time the sense of wholeness.

Description
An account of the resource
The underlying idea that noise and silence may constitute the two ends of the same continuum is the subject of our research. Noise and silence are examined as notions beyond their strict sense of the word; their expanded connotation reflects on creative thinking, aesthetic and cultural matters and scientific research. We focus on the relationship of noise and silence, with respect to sound and space, by interpreting them as spatial elements. The composition Continuum II for solo viola (2015) by N. Chatzopoulou, has been used as a platform in order to investigate how the elements of noise and silence, which are used structurally in order to attain cohesiveness and a continuous flow in time, can be interpreted in space. Experimenting with different surfaces, layers, textures and light, we aim to explore the fine constituents of silence and noise and consequently observe the points that they converge and diverge from each other. Without aiming to neglect the other senses, our cultural preference for the ocular proves useful in revealing hidden aspects of the relationship between silence and noise and the nature of this continuum. As a result, it has a significant impact on how we think, listen, design, create and live in our contemporary world.

Description
An account of the resource
An overview of Giacinto Scelsi's creative process, music and writings, focussing on the importance he gives to sound and particularly unisson. Could this be the "imprint" he has left on our musical continuum? Specific examples are given where Scelsi's influence on Xenakis may be deciphered.

Description
An account of the resource
There is a superficial, and yet fundamental paradox at the core of Xenakis' work: whilst being the creator of atomised sound (granular synthesis) he was also preoccupied with sound's continuity; or later on his career, while he openly promoted the techniques offered by digital synthesis (i.e. UPIC) he was critical of harmonic analysis and the synthesis derived from Fourier Transforms.
At a first glance, these positions may appear incompatible and incommensurable, but considering Xenakis' full awareness of the implicit problems in the aforementioned domains, this presentation would like to argue for possible ways that this fissure is in fact justifiable, by alluding to topological operations that reconcile the analog and the digital.
More specifically, the argument will mainly be exemplified in a transdisciplinary way by presenting personal work, in which rendered images taken from a parametrically designed piece of marble (designed by Arch-T) were used to as a compositional tool. The operations to and from the rendered images to the raw sound can be loosely defined mathematically as topological homeomorphisms.

Description
An account of the resource
The presentation brings together reflections on the continuum of Performance, Practice and the Academy that aims to address the wider interdisciplinary intentions of Iannis Xenakis. We reflect on the musical and spatial design synergies generated through design research within the three modalities of Performance, Practice and the Academy. ‘Design research’ as ‘researching through design (Downton 2003)’ provides a platform for creative practitioners to generate knowledge through their practice. The author will focus on a selection of his activities over twenty-five years as a musician (Performance), architect (Practice) and researcher (the Academy) seeking to cross-reference and find synergies between domains
PERFORMANCE: The ImprovScope Project
Whilst there has been intense examination of the continuum of music and architecture in relation to the outcome of musico-spatial design processes in the work of architects such as Xenakis , this creative research focuses away from the ‘product’ towards the actual creative process.
This research operates within the modality of ‘research through design (Downton 2003)’ at RMIT University Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory Sound Studios. The ‘ImprovScope’ project involves first-person explorations of the author’s improvisations on the electronic drum kit. This scoping out of the authors’ solo improvisational capacities will serve as the basis for musical compositions and creative works (See https://soundcloud.com/jjham/tripscapes) and is founded on improvisation as a vehicle through which to generate massive amounts of musical output. Improvisations are recorded in MIDI across three contexts: Beat and Fill; Drum Solo and Studio Beats, template at 100 BPM for 100 beats.
The project discusses the application of a spatial design parametric framework that offers affordance (Gibson 1979) to mediating a theoretical ‘musico-perspectival hinge (from Pérez-Gómez and Pelletier (1997)). The presentation contends that musicians who may be limited in their understanding of their music because of an inability to read, and in particular those who may be dominant in the visual-spatial thinking insights into the attributes that constitute their style. Through plan, section, elevation, axonometric projections and, ultimately, through 3D printing, drum based music is examined.
PRACTICE
This element of the presentation discusses the application of the ‘Y Condition (Martin 1994)’ within the design of the author’s own house at Bells Beach, Australia. Concepts of music, including Golden Section geometry, overlays of beat structures in window fenestration and metaphorical references to searing guitar solo’s are embodied within this built work. This element of the paper will discuss how musical concepts must, in the real world, be reconciled against pragmatic, regulatory and construction issues.
THE ACADEMY
The author reflects on a 16-year architectural design academic career and his current role in exploring musico-spatial design connections through design research. The Music Room project is discussed, wherein second year architectural design students were required to compose a ‘musique concrete’ piece, design a ‘Music Room’ space to listen to this, and construct a selection of these at 1;1. This project was run over a period of five years, resulting in around fifty projects being constructed.

Description
An account of the resource
In this paper I will present an analysis of Fausto Romitelli’s piece Yellow, Green and Blue aiming for the realization of the driving forces that forge the structural shape of the piece. I will primarily focus on selected concepts and ideas that could shed light on a more thorough understanding of such musical forces that not only affect the shaping of the musical form but could possibly suggest a more crucial reasoning on the understanding and listening experience of the piece. In addition to that I will address the question of syntactic coherence and sonic unity in a work of such plasticity, where discrete units such as motive, phrase, etc. are not particularly helpful terms in a sonic landscape which has to do more with sculpting of large masses of sound. F. Romitelli describes characteristically: “At the center of [his] composing lies the idea of considering sound as a material into which one plunges in order to forge its physical and perceptive characteristics: grain, thickness, porosity, luminosity, density and elasticity. Hence it is sculpture of sound, instrumental synthesis, anamorphosis, transformation of the spectral morphology, and a constant drift towards unsustainable densities, distortions and interferences, thanks also to the assistance of electro-acoustic technologies”.
The theoretical background of my analysis is intertwined with the ideas of Ms. Livia Theodorescu-Ciocanea that are thoroughly presented at her paper titled as “Timber Versus Spectralism. Ms. Theodorescu-Ciocanea describes nine different compositional tendencies in Spectral Music: Spectralism as timbral metaphor, mimetic Spectralism, Spectralism as heterophony, Spectralism and modality, Spectralism as an archetypal approach, etc. Considering such tendencies as an important point of departure, I created a theoretical - empirical model of analysis for the better comprehension and interpretation of the sounding components and gestural interconnections in Romitelli’s music.
My model comprises three hierarchical levels. The first level, “Pitch context /Harmony”, deals with the identification of pitch complexes and/or harmonic fields, intervallic schemas and the interaction of the harmonic and inharmonic spectra of the piece. The second level, “Motion/Procedure or (Musical Operations)” illustrates the means that determine the “behavior” and the shaping – pacing, formation – of the sound. The combination of the aforementioned is interpreted, in level III, as “Musical gesture”. I consider this to describe the shaping and directionality that the “sound energy” takes, in the micro and macro structural levels on the piece. Consequently, the proposed analytical discourse highlights the subtle transition from the harmonic-inharmonic elements through the way that they are formulated and shaped, leading to their sonic depiction and/or gestural formation reaching finally their structural instantiation into the music. The ultimate goal is the internal analysis and understanding of the gestural forces, their imminent effect on the sound and structure resulting in the formation and realization of larger structural levels of the piece. Each level of my analytical model will contribute to the broaden clarification of all the sonic/gestural events highlighting the reasoning behind the sonic energy that formulates the global structural shape of the piece.

Description
An account of the resource
In 1991, a stochastic music piece called Gendy3 was produced entirely by a computer program written by the composer Iannis Xenakis at CEMAMu. In his words, Xenakis asked "What is a composer? A thinker and plastic artist who expresses himself through sound being." We now can hear computer generated sounds that we were incapable of imagining before. The relations between human beings and music has been changed, from human control to digital control. In this research, I will deal with the following questions: Can new music help to enhance our epistemology of the universe? Can new music change our perceptions of the relations between human beings and music?
Xenakis adopts a western-scientific approach on composing his music. I Ching, on the other hand, from the East, is the object of more discussion and comprehension with the help of the development of mathematics and science. I will compare Xenakis’s approach and the I Ching to answer the above questions in three parts: philosophy, music, and human beings.
Conclusion
As the discussion above, a strong correlation between the western scientific approach on music and the eastern mysterious web of signs of math has appeared. To find out the concrete answer, a physical space with experimental music could be taken as a tool to take future steps on this analysis.

This paper looks at how sound, light and shadow performances could be achieved by the method of granulation and layering as demonstrated by the work of Iannis Xenakis and Laszlo Moholy Nagy. The similarities as well as the differences in the two approaches are suggestive of the potentialities of such a design methodology.

Description
An account of the resource
Architectural and music computational models have profoundly affected the ways we describe, interpret and evaluate existing architectural and musical works as well as the ways we design new works in both domains. Two aspects of these computational models – representation and process (rules) are considered here to foreground similarities and differences between the two art worlds. A new computational model, the allography machine, is considered in the end as an rule-based visual tool for making graphical/spatial compositions in both domains.

Description
An account of the resource
Since the Classical era and the Middle Ages, and in particular since Plato’s Timeus, the concept of continuum has preoccupied thinkers. In the early 20th century, this notion was reactivated by the theory of relativity as well as other theories such as the uncertainty principle, changing our perception of the world, and consequently artistic discourse. Even if this upheaval corresponded to technological advances on the one hand and the collapse of the romantic model on the other hand, it was only around the middle of the 20th century that artists adopted these new physical and metaphysical concepts, prompting new creative tools, especially in music and architecture.
